Hey Tribe,
Karma’s only a bitch when you are. Never a truer word spoken. Karma is all about universal balance. The universe in all her wisdom shows how our unconscious actions affect others by allowing the same thing to happen to us.
Galatians 6:7 says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows’”.
The law of cause and effect. It’s spoken about in many ancient scriptures.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is another well known Jesus quote from both Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12.
The idea is when we are cruel and hurtful or simply blasé in our actions the universe will reward us with the same. It’s even true in physics.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion. It states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
We don’t always notice that we are being ‘a bit of a dick’, until the same thing happens to us.
David Wilcox who I’m a big fan of spoke about ‘Karmic parenting’ in his mystery school. That the best way for children to learn is for the same thing to happen to them. When they are naughty and don’t really see it, the parents neutrally without animosity provide a mirrored response.
I decided to try it out…
My boyfriend Darren has a very sweet 3 year old called Daisy. A couple of weeks ago, we were visiting his parents with her. Daisy and I were doing some colouring. It was a simple drawing with lots of fairly large sections for us both to colour. I find colouring cathartic, and make sure it’s all linear and neat. Daisy is a pretty good colourer too. I used yellow, one of my favourite colours on a section. She decided that she didn’t like that and went over it with green. Now I wasn’t very happy with this behaviour. I said it was naughty but she found it quite funny. I then thought of karmic parenting and how best to proceed so that she understood what she had done. SO, I decided to colour over one of her segments in black.
She of course became very upset, claiming it “wasn’t fair” where in fact it was exactly fair. A precise mirroring of what she had just done. For me it felt pretty mean and abrasive. Darren understood and accepted my actions. Daisy was shall we say, exasperated for a while.
As we said at the beginning karma is only a bitch when you are. It seems the more we evolve the faster karma presents. I have noticed in my own life that on the occasions where I act unloving I get bitten in the bum fairly instantly.
Is ‘karmic parenting’ a good thing? A modern way of handling soulful and wilful children?
What do you think?

PS My student Richard, just informed me that’s how parenting was in the good old days. Well I never!
